1. What made me forget everything I know?
All my beliefs replaced by scenarios
Of unintelligent life, echoing in stereo
On invisible mics, winding to my mind.

    What made me forget everything?
All my beliefs, all my memories
All the episodes of you, especially the ones that hurt
And a few that made me laugh
Well, I can’t get them back.

Ruth Lee, an American woman of Chinese ancestry who works as a hostess at a Chinese restaurant, displays the flag of the Republic of China while she sunbathes on the beach so that other beach-goers do not mistake her for Japanese in the days following the Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor and Naval Air Station Kaneohe Bay and the U.S. declaration of war on the Empire of Japan. Miami, Florida, U.S.A. 15 December 1941.

I feel like people always manage to forget that Chinese people were accosted for looking Japanese.

  13. I’m sitting at JFK airport in New York, about to take the same flight to Rochester that I used to take to go back to college. It’s been over a year since I was in college, and much longer since the last time I flew there, as it were, as a homecoming. I miss the feeling of flying out and staying, the feeling of flying home. Now I’m only flying to visit, and that tiny cow town isn’t home any more.
